Professor Bernie Carter

Bernie is Professor of Children’s Nursing at Edge Hill University and is a children’s nurse.  Bernie leads the part of the CASTLE research programme that involves interviewing children and parents. She also contributes to the family engagement work.

Most of Bernie’s research focuses on children and young people whose lives are disrupted by pain, illness, disability, and complex health care needs. She is interested in finding out what is important to children, young people and their families so that changes can be made to improve their lives through better treatments and through making services child and family centred.

She is really pleased to be part of the CASTLE research programme.

Role within CASTLE:

Bernie is the lead for the interview part of the study (qualitative research).

Previous experience:

Bernie has been working with children and families as a children’s nurse or researcher for more than 40 years. She is particularly interested in the assessment of children’s pain and exploring the experiences of children growing up with a long-term condition.

Qualifications:

    • PhD, BSc (Hons) Nursing Studies,
    • SRN RSCN

  • Using innovative methods to engage children in research
  • Creative sharing of research findings, e.g., through creating resources such as animations with children and parents.
